Gardner, Kansas was founded in 1854 by George Armstrong Custer. The town was named for General Ulysses S. Grant, who had been the commander of the Union army during the American Civil War. Gardner became a main center for cattle and cotton production in Kansas. In 1902, Gardner became an independent city. The first settlers to arrive in Gardner were Major John Hays and his family, who arrived on July 1st, 1854. For many years there was only one store open in Gardner - the Half Moon Store operated by Jno. Hays and his son Johnnie (Cherokee) Hays. In 1907, two brothers named Wernher and Julius Gerhardt arrived from Germany with their families and established a flour mill in Gardner which they ran until 1916 when it went bankrupt. The Gerhardts then sold their business to Neely & Company which continued to run it until 1951 when it closed down due to lack of customers. It is currently being used as a farm implement dealership. In 1907 also came another new settler into Gardner - Hiram Davenport Jr., who brought his family with him from Iowa! They set up a store called the Davenport Mercantile Agency next door to Jno Hays' Half Moon Store where they continued selling goods until 1914 when Hiram died suddenly at age 53 while traveling home from visiting some friends near Topeka%. His widow formed a partnership with her brother-in-law Prentiss Tate (a local banker) to continue running the store until their death in 1946; after that time it passed out of familial hands completely! Davenport's store is still standing today - this time as part of the Kirtland Museum! Interestingly enough, not all of those early pioneers were farmers; there were also some businessmen Settlers such as Augustus Fenton (the father of future Mayor Harry Fenton), who started a livery stable nearby before moving on to become one of Wichita's most successful merchants; he later built himself an impressive home here! Elsewhere in town various other businesses were established including several saloons which served as social clubs for residents; these days you can still find remnants of some old favorites like The Golden Gopher Barbecue restaurant or The Grapeshot Saloon Chapel which serve up delicious histories dives quite regularly!
