Gardner, Kansas is a town located in Wichita County, Kansas, United States. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. Gardner is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The city of Hutchinson forms the eastern edge of Gardner and the unincorporated community of Northwood lies to the north. Gardner was platted in 1871 when James Fenton Gardner bought land east of present-day downtown Wichita. It was named after General George Armstrong Custer who fought in the Mexican-American War and died there in 1885 during an unsuccessful attempt to cross the River Arkansas near today's Diamond Bar. Gardner residents began arriving from central Kansas during World War I as soldiers needed housing close to their units. After that war ended, many Gardnerians became farmers or ranchers; some still live there today on small parcels of land near major highways. In 1957, Gardner voters passed a $15 million bond issue for schools and other public services including highway widening and new road construction; it remains one of Wichita County's most popular issues today. Today, Gardner has a mix of similar businesses and residences dating back to pioneer times with modern amenities such as expressways nearby that have made it easier for people to get around without having to go all the way out into rural Hutchinson County - making it one of Wichita's fastest growing communities over recent years

Today Gardner is a small town with a population of around 15 people and it is not considered an official city by any means
