The Gardner Air Force Base was once home to the United States Air Force’s 5th Bomb Wing. The wing was activated on September 12, 1942 as a unit of the Ninth Air Force and flew Boeing B-17 Flying Fortresses during World War II. The wing was inactivated on October 15, 1945. On July 1, 1955, the 5th Bomb Wing became part of the newly activated Fifth Air Division at Gardner AFB. On October 15, 1957, the wing moved from its original location at Whiteman AFB to Gardner AFB and assumed its current name. The 5th Bomb Wing made history by becoming first Wing inactivation to deploy gift items for President Dwight Eisenhower’s inauguration as President of the United States. Inauguration Day gifts included an Airstream trailer and an artesian well pump. In 1961, the 5th Bomb Wing received its first Boeing E-6B Sentry airplane which allowed it to conduct nuclear bombing missions over Cuba during Operation Mongoose. In 1966-1969, when Gardner AFB underwent renovations that increased its seating capacity by 300%, then-5th Bomber Wing Commander Colonel Artis Smith bestowed upon Tower AFB with one of only two KC-135R Stratotankers (the other being Dobbins AFB) when he transferred command effective February 1st 1969 followed by a successful maiden deployment utilizing this tanker from Geoland AB Italy on April 10/11 1969 flying mission over Southeast Asia supporting US forces battle against Communist insurgents using USAF assets including Special Forces providing air support direct support ground troops engaging enemy units numbered approximately 350 strong engaged with over fifty artillery piecestwenty three tanks five armored personnel carriers one light armored vehicle four antitank guns six machineguns
