Garden City is one of two cities in Johnson County; the other being Overland Park. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area and falls within the Topeka– Shawnee Hills-Asheville Combined Statistical Area (CSA). Garden City was founded by farmers in 1871 as a trading post on an isolated sandbar called Garden City Island. By 1881, it had grown to become a full-fledged town with a Post Office, jail, school and bakery. In 1906, Garden City became an incorporated city and has since been governed by a Mayor/Council system with three members elected at large from among its residents. The economy of Garden City is based largely on agriculture; soybeans are one of its main crops and there are also sizeable cattle ranches and smaller quantities of corn, wheat and dairy products. The downtown core contains several large commercial buildings dating back to the early 20th century including The Old Globe Restaurant which opened in 1907 and still functions as a popular tourist attraction today; Union Pacific Railroad station dating from 1893 which now houses an art gallery; and The Palace Theatre which opened in 1925 serving as home to local theater productions until it closed in 2014. Some notable landmarks in Garden City include: old high school Gymnasium for Boys & Girls (now used as apartments); Kirtland Air Force Base annex building - once home to fighter jets stationed here during World War II; Home Depot store built 1912 on Main Street near present day US Highway 69 - still operates regularly despite being vacant for many years; Garden Plaza complex located along Indian Creek - includes several thousand square feet (100 m2) mall featuring both indoor/outdoor swimming pools, basketball courts etc.; numerous churches including First Baptist Church established 1865 that remains one of the most active congregations within campground boundaries today followed by Christ United Methodist Church established 1902 having multiple wards throughout Johnson County including satellite locations outside Topeka/ Shawnee Hills CSA A number Of events have taken place within or adjacent to GardenCity over these years that have generated attention & led to redevelopment or new construction nearby: notably Senate hearings related to passageof historic balanced budget amendment & subsequent government shutdown resulting in impact on commerce throughout Johnson County (& surrounding area), tornado outbreak that struck central KS #1 January 2009 causing extensive damage @ garden CITY GARDEN CITY – Destroyed more than 100 homes total but no injuries reported incl some Class A office buildings (& approximately $20M spent rebuilding after storm), Grand Prix motorcycle race taking place each year around Memorial Day weekend near current site of Prairie View A&M University—eventually moved out amid public outcry over noise level levels
