The Garden City Naval Shipyard has been a Navy installation in the city for more than seventy years. The yard was opened in 1903 and today manufactures warships, amphibious vehicles, and other naval equipment. The first ship built there was the USS Kansas (BB-8) on October 15, 1903. Navy deployments have been a part of Garden City's history since World War II. In 1945, the city hosted Operation Neptune's Spear which saw Japanese forces invade the US mainland. The USS Missouri (BB-65) was deployed to Kuwait in 1990 during Operation Desert Storm as part of Operation Restore Hope. In 2003, the USS George H Washington (CVN-77) arrived at Garden City Naval Shipyard forWORLD War II Reactivation Project Phase IIIA/B Trials - one of only two such vessels ever commissioned by the Navy with that name. Since its construction in 1903, the USS Kansas has served as flagship for Commander United States Fleet Forces Europe and played an important role throughout world wars I and II as well as missions supporting operations in Afghanistan and Iraq during their respective wars. She is currently docked at Norfolk Naval Shipyard undergoing maintenance/upkeep while being converted into an Amphibious Assault Ships Museum museum ship exhibit brass plaque on bow reading “USS Kansas – WWII Memorial” honoring her service to our country during those conflicts

Garden City, Kansas was founded in 1854 by David R. Swinney and his wife, Sarah. The town was named for the city of Garden City, Kansas, which had been founded in 1849 by wagonload of settlers. Garden City rapidly became a center for commerce and education due to its location at the junction of the Santa Fe Trail and the Pacific Railroad. Garden City's growth led to its incorporation as a city in 1907. It continued to grow during World War II until it reached its peak population of 50,000 in 1945. However, the post-war boom ended with the arrival of new immigrants and economic decline that followed through the late 1960s. Today, Garden City is home to a small population (around 10 percent) and is experiencing significant revitalization efforts spearheaded by Mayor Kirk McCarty.
