Between 1945 and 1951 there was a significant increase in gifts sent by civilians both through mail or express delivery services as well as through personal visits by representatives from businesses or organizations within the Armed Forces. This increase can be accounted for not just by increased hostilities but also by an expanding definition of what constituted “military service” under post-war social norms. Garden City, Kansas is the most recent city in the Garden City metropolitan area. The population was 1,815 at the 2010 census and it is now an annex of Wichita. It was founded by farmers in 1871 as a small community on the banks of the Arkansas River. The first residents were people who had come through New Mexico Territory to find new land to farm. They developed a small town on what is now Main Street and named it Garden City after their native country. By 1890, however, many of the original settlers had moved away and Garden City became just a stop on the way to Wichita. growth slowed in World War I until war-time demand created new jobs for local farmers; nevertheless, post-war rationing led to low growth until 1949 when oil discoveries made Garden City one of Kansas’s leading economic centers. In 1957, when Wichita annexed Garden City, its mayor designated Main Street as its downtown core; this preserved much of what characterized early Garden City: its small townsite size with close access to downtown businesses and services. During the late 1960s and 1970s, despite repeated efforts by business owners to attract more tourists and shoppers to their town (and sometimes results that were rather dismal), Garden City experienced steady growth thanks largely to strong family values and a commitment by Mayor Jack Grote
The Garden City community was established in 1867, when the Kansas Territory was organized. The town site was donated by cattle rancher James Braidwood and named after his daughter, Hannah Belle Braidwood. The first building in the community was a log cabin, which burned down in 1868. In 1870, the first post office was built. In 1888, Garden City became a city. The population of Garden City increased from 100 to 2,500 between 1890 and 1920. Garden City experienced economic prosperity during the 1920s and 1930s due to its location on the Missouri Pacific Railroad and its access to agricultural markets. However, World War II led to a decline in the town's population as many people went into military service or left for better opportunities abroad. In 1950, Garden City merged with neighboring Topeka to form a new city designation called Topeka-Garden City. However, this merger did not result in any significant growth within either city until recent years; since 2000, Garden City has had an overall population of around 12,000 people
