The first planes to fly from Garden City were those of the USAAF Station 3 at nearby Sheppard AFB on December 15, 1941. The Air Force Base remained an active military station until it closed its doors in August 1966. It was then that theAAF gifted the property to the city of Garden City for use as their municipal airport. In 1971, the city madeover the airport and renamed it Garden City Municipal Airport after Mayor James Ewing's donation of land and funds to support this new venture. Garden City Municipal Airport has been used by both civilian and military pilots since its inception. Since 1978, it has been home to KC-135 Stratotankers of Air National Guard Squadron 145 (ANG 145) which is part of ANG 6th Wing located at Kissimmee/Winter Haven Airpark in Florida. In 1992, CNB opened up shop here as well - Canada North Airlines' predecessor - making this one of only two airports in Kansas with both commercial and military services under one roof!
