The first European to sight Emporia was Captain John Smith on his way to find a new route for the American fur trade in 1795. He named it "Emporia" after his home town of Embrun in France. A trading post and mill were built here by 1825, but they failed to take off because of competition from Wichita and Council Grove, Illinois. In 1834, Andrew J. Weir started a newspaper in Emporia and published until his death in 1892. In 1907-1909 white settlers moved into what is now the eastern edge of Emporia from Great Bend County due to drought conditions caused by severe weather patterns over that area known as the Great Plains Drought. In 1912 David Griggs proposed selling electric power to local farmers through wires running down hill from nearby towns like Council Grove and Wichita Falls so that these farmers could sell electricity back up at their homes to those living near them instead of being dependent on Comanche Power Plant which was just outside Fort Worth Texas at time.
