Emporia, Kansas is a city located in the U.S. state of Kansas. The population was 30,851 at the 2010 census, making it the 9th most populous city in Kansas. The city is part of the Topeka-Aldermann, KS Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Wichita-Naperville- Shawnee County, KS Combined Statistical Area. The first settler in Emporia was Levi Stubblefield who arrived on July 15, 1854 from Montgomery County, Pennsylvania with his family. The town was named after John Quincy Adams (1767–1848), one of America's first presidents and a leading figure during the American Revolution. Emporia developed as a small trading post on the south side of Missouri River where traders could purchase goods necessary for their travels to Canada or Mexico. In 1868, when Emporia became an independent city under territorial control from Ulysses S Grant’s United States Department of Interior, it had a population of 809 people and two stores serving as its only industry: groceries and flour milling. In 1870–71 Anson Phelps Dodge founded what later became known as Dodge City Oil Company which drilled oil wells at nearby Clear Creek near present day Mission Hills and exported crude oil to other parts of America until it merged with Standard Oil in 1911 to become ExxonMobil Corporation
