The town was named for the city of El Dorado in central Africa. The first post office in El Dorado was established in 1870, and the town began to grow rapidly thanks to its connection with the railroads. By 1880, it had a population of 2,000 people. In 1912, El Dorado became an incorporated municipality and continued to grow until it had a population of 10,000 people by 1930. Today, El Dorado remains a rural community with a small population density. The history of El Dorado begins with its founder John W. Pratt who arrived in 1868 on his way to sell goods he had gathered from his farm near Des Moines, Iowa to traders along the Santa Fe Trail. He soon realized that he could not simply trade goods for money as he had done before because there were no marketsavailable for goods that were not raw materials such as wheat or cotton. This led him to come up with the idea of naming his new town after an African city called El Dorado which he thought would be an excellent market place for selling these products since Africans were known for their high quality spices and other natural treasures discovered during their journey through Central Africa including ivory and gold! However while this name may have been accurate at first glance due to its similarity to another African name - Durban - it quickly fell out of use after just one year when demand decreased following World War I due mainly to restrictions placed on Europe by both belligerents! Consequently however, local residents continue to referto the original name "El Dorados" even though they no longer operate a post office or own any real property within town limits!
