On February 21stCaptain Auld's regiment arrived at Mexico City, Mexico Territory and garrisoned there until May 6th when they were transferred to Cairo, Illinois for duty with General Joseph Ewing's brigade in the Union army. In 1864 an troop shipment from El Dorado County was sent to Springfield, Illinois as part of the "Great Western Railroad" project. This troop shipment consisted of artillery pieces, ammunition stores and other supplies for soldiers stationed along the railroad line in order to protect it from Confederate raiders or sabotage attempts. Some of these gifts may still be seen today at old military bases across America including Ft Worth Army Airfield ( TX), Lackland AFB ( TX), Midway Island AF ( HI) and Whiteman AFB ( MO). On July 9th1865 an infantry battalion from this area was sent to Texas Army National Guard Comanche Barracks near Lubbock in order to provide protection against Indian raids into Sabine County. These troops remained at Comanche Barracks through November 1865 before being moved northward along the Red River toward Wichita Falls where they joined United States forces under General William Taney on December 15th 1865. After serving honorable service throughout Reconstruction times returned home on April 2nd 1868 having made a valuable contribution to our land AND people!

El Dorado is a small town in Kansas that has been around for over 150 years. The name comes from the gold Rush of 1849, when prospectors discovered large amounts of gold and silver near the town. After befriending some Indian traders during his travels through western Pennsylvania during the late 1800s, Wickersham decided to make his home in Kansas Territory in 1819.
