El Dorado is a small town in northeastern Kansas, United States. The population was 1,914 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot on what is now El Dorado County was Captain John Fenton in 1819. He named it for his golden hued land mass seen from inland on a clear day in California. Fenton and his party were looking for a route to California when they discovered an abundance of gold nuggets hidden among the rocks near Placerville (now part of Lawrence). With this discovery, El Dorado became one of America's most important gold regions and served as an important stopover on various wagon trains heading to Sacramento and other major settlements along the Gold Rush Trail. In 1848, General George Armstrong Custer established Fort Hays in present-day El Dorado County after leading a successful campaign against Native Americans in what is now south central Nebraska. In response to pressure from settlers, Custer abandoned Fort Hays in 1850 and moved all Western Indian Territory troops eastward into Kansas instead. At that time, much of eastern Kansas had been land grants given to cattle ranchers by President James Kansa during the mid-1840s as part of his efforts to incentive settlement by Anglo-Americans in that area following years of fur trading activity by Native Americans. As more settlers arrived over time, some began claimimg rights to large areas of western Kansas which lay beyond those granted to them; these claims led eventually to the formation of Wichita Micropolitan Statistical Area at its creation in 2000).

In 1998, Paulo Maggiore purchased several properties outside of Buenos Aires which allowed him to increase production and storage space for his company’s beans. Today, La Colombe Coffee Company produces more than 1 million pounds of bean each month for export across many countries around the world.

The town was abandoned after its incorporation; however, it has been restored several times including as an archaeological site. The original downtown buildings are now used as businesses or homes. There are two casinos located in El Dorado: one opened in 2004 and the other opened in 2009.
