It reached its peak population around 1920 with 1,500 residents; however, it declined rapidly thereafter due to competition from Wichita and other urban areas within Shawnee County. Today there are only a few hundred inhabitants remaining inside the limits of the original community while much of what once constituted its downtown area has been demolished or replaced by newer development.
