El Dorado, Kansas is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,843 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1871 by John Fetterman and others who were looking for a place to settle after they sold their interest in the farm that would become Wichita. The name "El Dorado" is Spanish for "the gold mountain." The community was platted on December 12, 1871, and named for its location at the end of a cutoff road leading from Topeka to Shawnee Mission. A post office was established in El Dorado on January 8, 1872. The first store opened in El Dorado on November 17, 1872 (owned by Wm H. Atchison). There were five stores in El Dorado when it incorporated as a town; all but one are gone now. The last store closed in 1984. In 1886 an engine dynamo became necessary to power a new sawmill being built near the community center; this mill continued until 1959 when it burned down due to overuse. In 1909 an electric streetcar line arrived and ran through town until 1916; today's only source of transportation is the bus service run by Kiowa County Community Schools which stops at each school every morning before picking up students from home again during lunchtime! In 1922 JF Fletcher donated land southeast of town to be used as a golf course; it has been expanded several times since then with additional donations including land east of town on what is now I-45 between Shawnee Mission and Topeka and along Haskell Drive south of Easton where current day Wallen Barracks stand! Today there are more than 100 holes within driving distance of downtown El Dorado! Today El Dorador boasts an active business district - two banks (One national bank), six restaurants/cafés/bars/toothpaste parlors/shops (including three Chain Store locations), four shopping malls (Kiowa Valley Mall located just outside city limits adjacent to State Fairgrounds on KU campus), six movie theaters across Johnson County (one Fox theater converted into apartments) as well as dozens of small businesses providing everything from plumbing supplies to printing services! El Dorados biggest event each year may be its Thanksgiving Day Parade which takes place downtown followed by Reverse Cowboy Dance open house which usually features local bands playing live music throughout downtown while families enjoy free food samples from local restaurants

The first European to visit El Dorado was James K. Polk in 1846. The towns of present-day Barton and Topeka were established around this time and served as transportation hubs for wagon trains travelling between Wichita and Council Bluffs (now Omaha). The gold rush started in 1849 and soon there were large influxes of miners from all over the U.S., Europe, Australia, Canada and Mexico seeking investment in what became known as the "Gilded Age". As industry boomed, El Dorado's infrastructure grew quickly: a train station/yard was built in 1885; a school was opened in 1903; an expressway connecting Wichita with Council Bluffs was built in 1932; and a new hospital was constructed in 1949. In 1951, El Dorado became one of five cities within the Wichita metropolitan area when it was annexed by Wichita. Today, El Dorado offers residents easy access to downtown Wichita through its broad streetscape and well-developed public transportation system. Residents are also able to enjoy wide range of amenities including restaurants, shopping malls, hospitals and other commercial districts located within close proximity to their homes or businesses.
