El Dorado is a small town in Kansas, United States. It is located in Clay County and has a population of about 375. The name "El Dorado" comes from the Spanish word for "gold." El Dorado was founded by the Comanches in 1867. The town was named after its first settler, David Hallett, who discovered gold near the town in 1868. The townsite was platted on April 14, 1867 by Andrew Wirtz of Lawrence, Kansas. It became a U.S. post office on September 24, 1870 under the name Gadsden City. In 1893, it changed its name to El Dorado because of claims of rich gold deposits at nearby Fort Dodge (now Wichita). The claim was not verified and no gold ever came to light; however, the name stuck around because people found it amusing that an extensive area within Clay County had been renamed for something other than an important military fortification during the Mexican-American War era. In 1951, when Interstate 70 bypassed El Dorado and merged with I-70 east of Wichita Falls, El Dorados saw its biggest growth since it had last been counted as a municipality – more than doubling their population from just over 350 to over 600 residents within 10 years! In 1855, the United States Congress approved a bill to create what is now El Dorado County, Kansas. The new county was named for the legendary gold Rush city of El Dorado in central Africa. The town of Glendale was founded in 1857 and soon became one of the most important towns in the area. The gold rush ended in 1865 but the legacy of El Dorado has stayed with the area ever since. The first white people to visit what is now El Dorado County arrived from Missouri in 1851. They were led by James K. Polk, who had been elected president that year and wanted to find a theater where he could deliver public speeches during his term of office. After finding no evidence of gold or silver nearby, they returned home disappointed but not before leaving behind some valuable artifacts including a cannonball found at Fort Haysen near present-day Wichita Falls, Texas. This event helped start the Gold Rush era in western Kansas and helped make Glendale an important center for trade and industry. After years of exploration, two men—John Wesley Powell and George Custer—sailed downriver on their chartered raft USS Roanoke in1896 to claim anystrikeable minerals that may have been discovered along the way. Their search failed to result in any significant findings but it did help spur interest throughout much of America in mineral exploration and development within what are now California, Oregon, Nevada and Arizona counties located within present-day El Dorado County as well as Dawson City on both sides of Interstate 40 between Dodge City and Topeka (now Shawnee). Although mining operations did not suddenly sprout up all over central Kansas after 1896 due largely to technological advancements such as cyanide poisoning methods used during extracting coal from underground mines (a practice which continued until 1903), Glendale quickly became an important center for trade because it contained access to transportation routes leading southward into Mexico City through Dodge City and also northward into Independence until Interstate 70 was completed just east of downtown Glendale in 1938 giving residents easy access to all parts of Mexico without having to leave their homes! In fact, even today many businesses still operate out-of-state citing lower costs associated with living outside OFA standards while still providing quality products/services!
The history of El Dorado, Kansas begins with the arrival of the American Indians in 1777. The first European to settle in what is now El Dorado County was Pierre Voisin, who built a trading post on the Arkansas River in 1779. In 1814, General Sam Houston defeated Mexican forces at the Battle of San Jacinto and acquired land east of the Rio Grande as part of that battle's aftermath. The area became known as Houston County, Texas. In 1821, President James K. Polk authorized a survey of present-day El Dorado County and its neighbor Hopkins County to determine whether they should be included within Texas or become part of Oklahoma Territory. The results were published in 1822 and approved by Polk; thus, the two counties were permanently united as Oklahoma Territory. In 1907, an act was passed creating Haskell County from portions of Tulsa and Osage Counties north of Interstate 40—the second time this had happened in Kansas' history. At that time, all but 1/4 mile (1 km) of present-day Haskell was still unincorporated territoryincluding much of what is now downtown Wichita Falls
