The Coast Guard Auxiliary in El Dorado, Kansas was founded on December 15, 1923. The first Coast Guard unit to be stationed in this town was the Cutter Unit. In 1951, the CG station moved from El Dorado to Topeka and the Auxiliary became known as Topeka CG Station #1. On November 6, 1961, Topeka CG Station #2 was renamed El Dorado CG Station after the city of El Dorado which is located in eastern Kansas. The Auxiliary has grown and changed over time with many additions and changes to its organization including a helicopter squadron in 1992. The present day Coast Guard Auxiliary has a detachment in Cairo, Illinois which provides support to ships at the Port of Chicago during Mardi Gras season as well as other special events.

The company abandoned it in 1868, but it continued to be used as a trading post until 1897. The town of El Dorado was platted in 1871 and became a small community near the site of the original fort. In 1907, the town name changed to Topeka after Topeka, Kansas, the capital of Kansas. In 1861, Abraham Lincoln issued an executive order designating Topeka as the provisional capital of Kansas Territory because Shawnee City had not yet been established as the territorial capital. On January 12, 1862, Topeka was officially designated as the provisional capital of Lawrence County when that county was created from part of Douglas County. The city hall and other buildings were built at this time. By 1870, Topeka had become an important commercial center with several stores and hotels along Main Street and around Market Square. The city also developed an extensive streetcar system that connected many different neighborhoods within and outside of Topeka. By 1900Topeka had over 100 businesses employing more than 1,000 people
