The post office was established at El Dorado on November 5, 1854, and continued to be operated until March 3, 1861. At its peak in 1860, it had a population of around 150 people. There are several theories about why El Dorado failed to prosper after its establishment: 1) The cost of goods transported across the great American West proved too costly for local farmers to afford; 2) There were few opportunities for settlers to take advantage of the rich mineral resources discovered nearby; 3) A lack of horses and mules doomed the town when shipments stopped coming; or 4) Residents adopted Native American ways and lifestyles which made them less accessible to white men.
