The cavalry was tasked with guarding U.S. citizens and property during the Mexican-American War. The El Dorado Infantry was an infantry regiment in the Union army during the American Civil War. It was raised in 1864 and served as part of the 9th Kansas Cavalry Division. The regiment was disbanded in 1865.
El Dorado is a city in and the county seat of Elk County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Micropolitan Statistical Area. The first white person to set foot on what would become El Dorado County was Lorenzo de Zavala in 1847. In 1860, Captain John C. Fremont surveyed and named the county for his old home country – Spain – but it reverted to Mexico after the Mexican-American War. The first town established in El Dorado County was Pawnee City in 1867. A post office called Pawnee City was established in 1870, and remained in operation until 1907. In 1901, when Kansas became a state, El Dorado County became one of its first two counties; it has since been divided into three other counties: Hutchinson, Ottawa and Woodbury each having a portion of what is now Elk County within their boundaries. The current courthouse located at 100 W 4th Street was built between 1902 and 1904 with funds provided by local businessman James Brouncker Sr.. This building served as both courthouse and jail until 1908 when a new courthouse was constructed adjacent to the present site at 400 W 4th Street which still houses that structure today. At first seeking rich gold deposits discovered on nearby San Miguel River property instead he soon realized that there could be much more valuable resources available here than just gold - components used to make firearms were abundant here also including copperas well as lead and silver ore not easily accessible elsewhere Early transportation links facilitated easy access both northward via wagon road from Independence ($5 per day) to Wichita via Topeka ($10) then westward via Leavenworth & Lawrence $2 per day wagons hauled watercourses downhill from Lakeshore Hills then upriver past present-day Kansas City before joining Missouri Pacific Railroad mainline at Pawhuska Junction A second wagon road linking Independence & Shawnee Mission $4 per day connected these nodes making it possible for goods moving between these communities bypassing Topeka altogether .
