Dodge City is one of the most famous and well-known cities in America for its cuisine, culture, and history. The city has been home to various cultures since its founding by the Cheyenne and Arapaho Indians in the 1800s. Today, Dodge City is a center of food culture with several popular restaurants scattered throughout the city. One of the most well known locations for tactical coffee is The Java Joes on Main Street. This restaurant has been serving up delicious coffee drinks since 1978. The first Tactical Coffee shop was opened in 1938 by two brothers named Harry and John McNamara. The brothers were part of the American Legion Auxiliary and they decided to open a coffee shop to help support their troops during World War II. The java joes was actually started as an air raid shelter that served as a place to purchase snacks and drinks for soldiers stationed in Wichita Falls, Texas at that time. After the war ended,the McNamaras reopened their coffee shop inside of an old military base called Fort Riley which had been closed down during the war years due to lack of resources. In 1951, Harry McNamara passed away leaving his son John Sr., who continued running his father's business until 1984 when it was bought by his brother Harry Jr.. John Sr.'s death did not stop John Jr.'s from continuing running his business however; he died in 2006 having left behind three children who all ran their fathers' businesses before him- Mike (now Executive Chef at Watershed), Danielle (owner/operator of both The Java Joes & Bistro d'Oro), & Stacey (founder/operator of Plateau). During prohibition days in Kansas City, Tactical Coffee served up some pretty impressive beers like Blue Moon Irish Stout or Hammered Hog Brown Ale!
