Dodge City, Kansas is a small town located in the US state of Kansas. The population was 6,471 at the 2010 census. Dodge City is home to the Dodge City Museum and the Dodge City Arts District. The city was founded in 1867 by wagon drivers who abandoned their horses and cattle in nearby Salina after hearing about a gold rush in California. As the only town in what would become Wichita County, Dodge City was an important stop on stagecoach routes between Wichita and Topeka. In 1896, when Wichita County was organized into districts, Dodge City became part of District No. 2. It remained an unincorporated community until it incorporated as a city on November 3, 1907. Dodge City is named for General John Abert Dodge, namesake of present-day Wichita County and one of the earliest settlers hereabouts. General Abert had served with distinction during the Mexican War (1846-1847), and later distinguished himself as Major general in the American Civil War (1861-1865). He returned to America following that conflict and established himself as a rancher near Topeka before his death in 1875 at age 54 years old. His son John Abert Dodge II took over his father's business until he died in 1903 at age 71 years old; thereafter it passed through several families before reaching its current owners who are still operating it today. In addition to its role as a stopping point on stagecoaches between Wichita and Topeka during those early days there were also other transport solutions available for goods moving around this rural area: wagons pulled by teams of horse or mule teams could be used to bring goods downriver from Council Bluffs or Beatrice while faster boats could take advantage of smuggling operations run by Native Americans known as "the Kiowa." These waterborne transportation methods continued until well into the 20th century; however, they did not provide continuous access to markets along lonesome Road 50 where village residents grew crops that sustained them year-round despite distance from any metropolitan areas larger than Lawrence or Leavenworth thanks largely to irrigation systems installed throughout this region during that time period courtesy of then local farmers such as George Stephenson & company! The first post office within Dodge City proper opened on October 13, 1865; however mail service through Salina continued uninterrupted until 1880 due largely to communications difficulties existing between Salina & Topeka via Indian Prairie Creek which ran through present day Hutchinson Counties! By 1892 all but one settler living within territorial boundaries had left for either Kansas Territory or Nebraska Territory due primarily to political instability associated with various wars going on back East! prior thereto! During these years many buildings including both government buildings including latterly renamed "DodgeCity Hall" were constructed utilizing lumber brought overland from Council Bluffs!! This sawmill complex employed up to 150 men initially although finally closedcirca 1940s due again primarily to poor economic times!. As more people arrived hereabouts opportunities arose for businesses such as grist mills & sawmills becoming operational once again resulting in increased jobs/income for everyone involved!!! However we must remember that even though things may have been better now than ever before certain challenges remain always associated with anything new like growth especially when attempting make lasting changes??? peculiar indeed which makes history so interesting….
