Dodge City, Kansas was founded in 1867 by George A. Dodge and his brother-in-law, James W. Dixon. The city was named for General John C. Fremont, who had served as the first governor of Kansas Territory. Dodge City developed around the Dodge family's cattle ranching businesses, which produced high quality beef that was sold throughout the Midwest and East. The city also became a major railroad center due to its position on the Santa Fe Railroad. In 1907, Dodge City became the capital of Kansas Territory after it was moved from Topeka. The city hosted the 1912 Republican National Convention and suffered significant damage during World War I when much of downtown was destroyed by bombing raids. During Prohibition (1925- 1933), Dodge City become one of the most notorious prohibition towns in America because it became an illegal bootlegging and alcohol trafficking hub. However, despite its struggles with prohibition, Dodge City remained an important cultural and economic center for a wide cross section of American society until the late 20th century. Today, remnants of many of these industries remain including a notable rodeo arena and several steak houses located in downtown downtown

In 1870, the city became a territorial capital of Kansas after it was annexed by that state. The first post office in the city opened in 1871, and it continued to serve as its primary headquarters until 1907. The first school in the city opened in 1872 and served grades K-12 until 1915. The town of Dodge City was incorporated on April 14, 1898, and it ceased to exist as an unincorporated community following that date.
