Derby, Kansas is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas that was founded in 1854 by antislavery activists. Derby's history is connected to slavery and the American Civil War, which it sided with. Derby, Kansas is a small town in Atchison County, Kansas, United States. The population was 2,027 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Topeka-Santa Fe metropolitan area. The first settlers in Derby were Charles Myrick and his family who arrived on July 14, 1854 from Illinois. John Dutton also settled in Derby about this time. A post office called Derby was established in 1859, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. In 1865, a group of Methodist Episcopal missionaries from Missouri arrived in Atchison County and organized what would become the First Congregational Church of Atchison County. In 1868 they built a log church on the corner of Main and Third Streets. The original building still stands to this day as the oldest public building in Derby. The mission has been inactive since 1978 but continues to be referenced by locals as one of its earliest successes storytellers tell about early days when Christianity was new hereabouts In 1870, another group of Methodist Episcopal missionaries arrived from Missouri and founded what would become the Second Congregational Church of Atchison County – also known locally as First United Presbyterian Church due to their affiliation with that denomination at that time . This church served as the main meeting house for many years before being replaced by an existing schoolhouse which served as both a mosque/mosque during prayer services (19th century) and a library (1890s). To this day there are remnants of both churches remaining within walking distance of each other on either side of I-70 just eastbound off US 528 near milepost 16 north .
