This clause allowed for the States of Kansas (then part of Missouri) and Nebraska to form their own militias under federal command. In 1928 a new armament program was begun by President Franklin D. Roosevelt which saw the purchase of over 1 million rounds of ammunition for military use by members of the National Guard across America including purchases made in Derby! Since its inception within our communitythe National Guard has played an important role in supporting local businesses and citizens alike through providing goods such as clothing, equipment, sheltering during disasters or protests/siege situations etcetera- all without having to leave their homes! Derby, Kansas is a town in Haskell County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Derby was founded in 1874 by John and Mary Derby, who named it for their home town of Derby in England. The first post office was established in 1875. It was moved to its present location in 1907. In 1907, the Minneapolis-St Paul Railroad donated land to create the now known as Derby Park. When that park became available again for development in 1961, the city annexed it and changed its name to Derby. The first store opened in Derby on Main Street on October 16, 1874 by Jno Hoadley and his wife Nancy Hoadley (née Fenton). A grocery store and two hotels were built before World War I destroyed most of downtown derby's businesses; however, General Mills reopened a flour mill there in 1920 which served as the town's main industry until 1985 when it closed down due to competition from Wichita's new multiplex movie theater complex. In early 1984 local residents successfully lobbied Kutztown State University (now Missouri State University) to open an engineering graduate school there with plans for downtown redevelopment; but because KSU never developed full plans for the site or hired an architect they forfeited their right to use what would become Morningside Heights between First Avenue North and South Streets east of campus - a portion now occupied by Pemaquid High School - and instead used what is now north end of First Avenue south of South Streets along Ohio Street which ultimately resulted in much higher property values around Morningside Heights than around downtown derby. The unit served as a militia to protect the state from British forces. In 1812, the second national guard unit was raised in New York City and served as a militia to protect the city from Spanish raiders. In 1861, the third national guard unit was raised in Kentucky and served as a Militia to protect the state from Confederate raids. On December 6, 1863, President Abraham Lincoln called for all possible states to raise their own military squads of untrained men capable of meeting any emergency threatening their states. Assemble at once every regiment within your State... Look out for symptoms of insurrection or disloyalty: mutinous officers; disobedience to lawful commands; circulating false rumors tending to discredit our laws and ushers in anarchy among our people... On such an occasion I will call forth all your vigilance and put you into action with promptitude and effect. This order came through General Andrew Johnson who ordered all Unorganized Militia units throughout America (and Canada) back into uniform on December 7th 1863
