Derby, Kansas is a small town located in Lancaster County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,512 at the 2010 census. Derby is considered to be a centrally located community because of its location on the main road connecting Wichita and Topeka. Derby also has access to Interstate 35 and Interstate 40. In 1881, the first post office in Derby was established with a mailing address of "Plymouth". The name changed to "Derby" in 1906. In 1951, the post office was moved from Plymouth to Derby due to population growth in that area. In 1957, the name again changed to "Derby". The first store in Derby opened in 1912. It was a general store operated by John Wessels and his wife Emmaionette Sellers. The current store building was built in 1925 and is used as a restaurant/barber shop/mail box service station combination currently known as Pinnacle Barber Shop & Mail Box Service Station. The original store had two floors with an upstairs living room/bedroom and downstairs kitchen/. Today's building contains four levels including an attic where mail is delivered today before being placed intoboxes on lower levels for later pickup by mail carriers- this allows customers more flexibility when it comes time for their mail pickups! The first school in Derby was built in 1911 and named after Mrs Johnnie Hocking who donated land for it; however, there wasn't any school until 1921 when Mrs Lula White donated money towards construction of one which now seats up to sixty students inside with outside seating available for those who need it during storms or other weather conditions that might require closed classes or lack of students for some periods of time (similar model exists at Topeka High School). A new $4 million dollar school addition which replaced both buildings on Main Street between Ninth Avenue South and Tenth Avenue North opened its doors on October 1st 2013! This new high school provides much needed education space adjacent to downtown which has been vacant since 1984!
