Derby, Kansas is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. Derby is part of the Wichita– Leavenworth metropolitan area. Derby was founded in 1855 by Joshua Ainsworth and his wife Nancy. It became a town on November 3, 1887. The first post office in Derby was established on December 12, 1886. The first store in Derby was built by Hiram Hixon and opened on July 4, 1889. It was rebuilt in 1902 and renamed the First National Bank of Derby. In 1907, the First National Bank merged with the Farmers State Bank to form the present First American Federal Savings and Loan Association of Derby (FASL). FASL remains a separate bank today with its own headquarters building located on Main Street in downtown Derby. The original Sawmill Dam No. 2 dam across the Arkansas River formed when a sawmill operated by Jens Lund that had been built near Newcastle upon Tyne failed in 1901; it now forms part of Watkins Glen State Park upstream from where it used to stand .
