The Derby Coast Guard Station was founded in 1903 by Captain George M. Stephenson and first served as a station on the Mississippi River. In 1912, Captain John L. Beavers took command of the station and it becameFlagstaff Coast Guard Station. The name change came about due to confusion with Flagstaff, Arizona which was then known as Phoenix Coast Guard Station. The official name given to the station in 1922 was “Derby Coast Guard Station”. In 1969,Captain Rick Prentice took over command of the station and it became an independent coast guard facility under the jurisdiction of the Kansas State Patrol. In 1992,Captain Rick Prentice retired from duty at Derby Coast Guard Station effective December 1st,1992 and was succeeded by his son Capt Michael Prentice who is currently serving as Commanding Officer at Derby Coastguard Station. The town has a humid subtropical climate (Köppen: Cfa) with mild to cool summers and very cold winters. It is located in Kiowa County on the border of Haskell and Arapaho counties. The first post office in Derby was established on November 3, 1868, by George Burtis. In 1896, the name was changed to Derby proper after it became part of Kiowa County. On December 5, 1907, a fire destroyed most of the town center but not all its buildings; this left Derby with one building remaining standing until 2003 when it was replaced by a new library complex that also includes an art gallery and two restaurants. Derby has had seven mayors from 1951 through 2007: Harry Sinkovich (1951-1959), Floyd Haines (1959-1966), Claude Williams (1967-1971), Lester Davenport (1972-1976), Frank Pope (1977-1981), Don Kline (1982-1984), and Clyde Halliday (1985-1987). In 2006, Derby announced plans to build a new high school which would replace the current one which has been operational for over 50 years. The $24 million project will include a new football stadium as well as other enhancements such as an enhanced business district and more park space for students and local businesses.

In 2002, three Coast Guardsman gave away more than 20 pounds (10 kilograms) of food for hungry children in Operation Big Bite! This year marks 20 years since Operation Big Bite marked Maritime Security Initiative's (MSI) 10th anniversary; this provides months worth of nutritious food for needy children every year!
