The industry that developed here included manufacturing goods such as shoes, flourishes (such as buttons), hats, saddles and other horse equipment; lumber; agriculture including crops like corn, beans and wheat;and tourism activities like rafting down the Arkansas River or taking tours through downtown featuring old buildings dating back to priorivilization times

Coffeyville experienced some growth during World War II as a result of the nearby military installations at Fort Riley and Topeka Naval Base. In 1945, the post office closed due to lack of mail volume; however, it reopened on July 7th that year with new postal facilities. During this time, several small businesses opened up around town including a bakery and an ice cream parlor which are still open today as independent businesses. In recent years, Coffeyville has seen steady development thanks to its location within easy commuting distance of Wichita and its many cultural attractions such as two museums (the historical Shawnee County Courthouse Museum and Topeka State University) as well as numerous shopping malls and professional centers across Wichita’s downtown core
