When the USS Constitution arrived in Coffeyville, Kansas on Dec. 15, 1867, the town had only a few buildings and no navy ships. But soon enough, the town was filled with people who were eager to welcome their new visitors. The first Navy ship to visit Coffeyville was the USS Constitution’s tender ship, HMS Ayrshire, which arrived on Feb. 3, 1868. The USS Constitution’s crew made numerous visits to Coffeyville during its two years of deployment in the US Navy. On Nov. 5, 1869, Commodore John Dutton relieved Captain William Farragut in command of the USS Constitution when that ship left for Hampton Roads to take on reinforcements from European warships under Admiral David Dixon Porter. Dixon Porter was killed at sea while flagship of Rear Admiral James Welles’s squadron off Norfolk in December 1870; Welles succeeded him as Flag Officer commanding United States Naval Forces Europe. Commodore Dutton visited Coffeyville again on Jan. 2nd 1870 and donated goods from his stores onboard his ship back to the townspeople in appreciation for their support during those difficult times ahead for America’s navy afloat and ashore (1). On Apr 4th 1870 when Commodore W P Howe relieved Commodore Dutton as Commanding Officer of USS Constitution at Portsmouth England he also donated goods from storerooms onboard Enterprise back to Coffeyville residents (2). It is interesting to note that although Commodore Howe took over command of USSConstitution after Captains W Farragut and V H Pickering resigned due to age or health reasons he kept all sailing orders aboard Constitutions until he departed England on Apr 12th 1870 finally ending any hope of an American victory at Manila Bay (3).

Coffeyville is a small town in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the eastern edge of Coffeyville Lake. The population was 1,826 at the 2010 census. The first Europeans to visit what is now Coffeyville were traders and travelers who passed through in 1824 by way of Wichita and Pawnee Pass. Polk to Uriah Cady Whipple gave rise to present-day Coffeyville when Whipple claimed it for the United States government as part of Indian Territory subject to Article 3 of the Treaty of Fort Bridger which ended American Indian Wars in 1868. In 1871, entrepreneurs Hennepin Brothers began trading postcards from their store front at 111 Main Street with claims along both sides of Cedar Creek (now called First Avenue). In 1902–03 an irrigation canal was constructed through this area bringing new life and development to what would become known as "The Town". The early years saw heavy farming but little industry; however, during World War I there was significant growth due to military production in nearby Topeka and Hutchinson. After the war there was a period of growth based on service industries such as trucking and manufacturing; however these times have since passed away as competition has increased outside demand for local goods and services within Coffeyville itself rather than outside markets Today's economy depends heavily on trade with neighboring towns such as Lawrence and Overland Park; construction; agriculture including livestock grazing; tourism providing entertainment; business services such as accounting, law enforcement As a result of its location close to major metropolitan areas - Topeka/Aldridge and Lawrence - Coffeyville has seen rapid job growth over recent decades which has led to increased traffic congestion on main streets which have caused some residents concern about gentrification or displacement . There are plans underway by city leaders to create an open space adjacent to town hall that will allow for more public use including ultimate pastureland for horses and other outdoor activities .
