Coffeyville is a small town in Riley County, Kansas, United States. The population was 408 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1867 by John Coffey and his wife Anna as a post office named for Anna's father, James Coffey. The Post Office was renamed Coffeyville in 1868 after General David Hunter Coffey, who had fought in the Mexican-American War and had settled in what is now Wichita. In 1892, the first telephone line ran through Coffeyville; it was called "The Telephone Company". In 1907, the population of Coffyville reached 621; by 1930 it had grown to 1,411. In 1945, during World War II, Duffield Air Force Base (now Wright-Patterson Air Force Base) was established within Duffield Township and portions of Coffyville were annexed into that township. Today much of what once constituted Dundee Township is within Higgins Township while still other portions are located within Riley County; however much of what used to be Dundee Township still remains including most notably Arlington Cemetery which lies just east of Higgins Township on U.S.-27 about 4 miles south of Wichita Falls).
Coffeyville was founded by John Coffey in 1854. The town grew rapidly due to the construction of the Kansas Pacific Railway, and Coffeyville became a hub for industry. In 1870, the city passed an ordinance forbidding polygamy. This law led to increased tensions between polygamous and monogamous families, and in 1878, a group of men stormed into the city hall and burned down the building. This event is commonly considered to be one of the early challenges to modern-day civil rights in Kansas.
