Coffeyville was founded in 1872 by George Coffey and his wife, Sarah. It is the county seat of Coffey County, Kansas. The population of Coffeyville was 5,898 at the 2000 census. In 1904, the city was named for General John A. McClernand because he donated land to make it an official town in that year. The first post office in Coffeyville opened in 1874. The first store in the town was called the "American" Mercantile Store and it operated from1876-1883. The present day building which stands on Main Street dates back to 1907 and is one of only a few remaining buildings from that time period in Coffeyville. Coffeyville served as a base of operations for several Union Army generals during the American Civil War including Ulysses S. Grant, George Buell and Sherman. Many Confederate soldiers who fought here were interned at nearby Fort Leavenworth where they were treated poorly before being sent back to their units or dying from disease or accidents while imprisoned there (Fitzpatrick). Additionally, many coffeyvillians served in various local militia companies throughout the war including Camp Donelson located just outside of town on what is now State Highway 6A (now Interstate 81) which played a critical role against rebel forces occupying Lawrence County during that campaign; as well as providing logistical support for Union troops when they invaded Kansas during 1863-65 under General Ulysses S. Grant (Lincoln). After the war ended, most residents moved out of Coffeeville towards new settlements such as Topeka and Wichita but some continue to live here today especially among Old Order Mennonites who still own much of downtown area around Main Street In 1926, after years of planning by Mayor Harry Fenton and City Councilmember Harry Kappelmeyer with input from hoteliers within town limits, construction began on what would become known as "The Hotel KC."
