Coffeyville is a small town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 715 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. Coffeyville was founded in 1881 by John Coffey and his wife Eliza. The first post office in Coffeyville was established on November 1, 1881, and remained open until it was discontinued on December 31, 1986. The name of the town may be derived from an early settler named George Coffey who used to work for Abraham Lincoln's family as a personal servant. Founded by John Coffey and his wife Eliza in 1881 along with other small towns within Sedgwick County, Coffeyville quickly became one of the most prospering communities in Kansas during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location near major railroads and other resources. In 1903, Coffeyville annexed the nearby city of Topeka which had grown rapidly since it was given city status two years earlier by then-Governor David Brinkley. During this time period Topeka experienced rapid growth thanks to its newly constructed water system and access to several key rivers that helped make it one of America's leading cities during its formative years. During World War II, Duffield Air Force Base (now Dyess AFB) was located just east of town limits on what is now Ulysses S Grant Boulevard; military officials used Duffield for training operations throughout much of 1945-46 as well as providing logistic support for Operation Crossroads which aimed to end World War II completely through landings at Guam and Leyte Gulf. One result of military activity occurred when a significant portion of local farmland became unusable due to extensive damage caused by bombing raids; according to historian Ken Loughridge this resulted in "the largest agricultural evacuation ever ordered by the state government." After the war ended, Duffield AFB closed down but portions remain currently occupied as Dyess AFB does today - home not only to some world-class air defense systems but also numerous administrative buildings housing various commands responsible for day-to-day operations at Dyess AFB including those responsible for strategic bombers such as KC-135 tankers tasked with carrying out nuclear strikes deep inside enemy territory). In 1960, after years of discussion between residents and local business owners about establishing a shopping center adjacent to their schools/ churches/civic center complex known municipally as "The Village", plans were finally approved by Sedgwick County Commissioners that led to construction beginning in 1962 featuring initial store openings from 1964 until 1971 followed by continued development culminating in 1984 when The Village opened its doors fully unto itself complete with original architecture designed specifically for that occasion including expansive landscaping typical of prewar American towns situated among high trees & leafy gardens characteristic both nationally & internationally..
