Atchison, Kansas is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 712 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–McAlester Combined Statistical Area. Atchison was founded by settlers in 1881 and became a full-time municipality in 1907. It ceased to be a municipality on March 15, 1920. The first settler at Atchison was John Newton who arrived December 3, 1881 from what is now central Illinois. He named his new settlement "Atchison" after the then-recently organized Territory of Kansas that stretched from east to west Texas and included Present day Wichita County and much of Sedgwick County (now Wyandotte County). In early 1882 Newton started building a log cabin which he named "Moses", after Moses Wheeler who had come toKansas earlier that year with another group of pioneers under the leadership of Captain James Waco. Newton's cabin served as the nucleus for what would become Atchison over time; other early settlers include George Smeaton (1883), Winfield Scott(1884), Josiah White(1885), Elijah Beal(1887), Isaac Baldwin (1889) and Hiram Greenleaf (1892). Over time the town grew rapidly with arrivals from all over America including Irish immigrants such as Father Donohue (1901) and Brothers McConnell (1902). By 1907 Atchison had an estimated population of 2,500 people; it reached 5,000 by 1925. Growth stopped abruptly during World War II when many residents left for military service or because Of munitions production in nearby Wichita which led to mass unemployment throughout most of postwar America. However growth resumed following World War II when many residents returned to their homes and businesses renewed their efforts to build more permanent structures within minutes after they were destroyed by bombing raids or fires caused by American soldiers or civilians acting out of patriotism rather than economic necessity. In 1970s Atchison experienced rapid growth due largely to annexations by neighboring towns such as Shawnee Mission and Lenexa but also through annexation by adjacent Wichita counties including Douglas and Emporia Counties during various periods since 1950s until today when residency restrictions have once again placed limits on real estate development within City Limits
