The Atchison, Kansas Coast Guard has been providing a service to the community since 1878. The Coast Guard's main mission is to provide law and order on the water and ashore, support coastal infrastructure and protect civil rights. In 1912, the Coast Guard Auxiliary was established in response to concerns about shipping traffic along the eastern seaboard. The Auxiliary provides personnel and resources for coastal patrol, search and rescue operations, maritime security patrols,Hi-9 communication services and more. In 1941, the Coast Guard acquired its first helicopter fleet which allowed for greater coverage of the coast from land to air. In 1959, Atchison became home to America's first full-fledged helicopter squadron when it commissioned the Lockheed P-3C Orion. Helicopter landing pads have been located at both Atchison Municipal Airport (AAP) and Hutchinson Municipal Airport (HUNT). The helicopters are used for various tasks such as Search & Rescue (SAR), Law Enforcement (LE), Environmental monitoring (EM), Pleasure boat escort/patrolling/logistical support missions as well as general aviation purposes such as crop dusting or firefighting. Since 1992, Coast Guardsmen have worn body armor in an effort to reduce their vulnerability while performing their duties on land or at sea. Thisarmor has also helped identify potential threats while on shore leave or during deployments offshore. Atchison, Kansas is a town in Shawnee County, Kansas, United States. The population was 997 at the 2010 census. Atchison is the county seat of Shawnee County. The town was incorporated in 1869. It is named after John Atchison, who founded the town. Apostle Park is located in downtown Atchison and was built as an exposition center for the 1893 Chicago Fair. The northwest corner of Main Street and First Avenue in downtown Atchison contains one of the few remaining examples of a two-story block adobe building from pioneer times in Kansas City, Missouri. The building has been used as office space by various businesses since it was built; it currently houses a bank and several small shops. The Coast Guard is a voluntary nonprofit organization and its mission is to provide safe and efficient coastal security by enforcing maritime law, investigating crimes on our coasts, and providing humanitarian assistance. One of the first things the Coast Guard did was founded in 1790 when Captain John Smith sailed into Nantucket Harbor with supplies for his troops fighting in the American Revolution. The Coast Guard has since grown to become one of America’s most reliable services. In fiscal year 2018, the Coast Guard generated $14.9 billion in revenue which supports more than 2,000 jobs across 26 states. In addition to their important missions ashore and afloat, members of the Coast guard also serve as protectors of our skies by flying search-and-rescue missions as part of Operation Neptune’s Spear or providing protection from chemical spills during event such as Hurricane Harvey or Maria. Members of the Coast Guard have a rich history that goes back to before America even formed! One example is when Captain John Smith sailed into Nantucket Harbor with supplies for his troops fighting in the American Revolution. Another example is when Commodore Richard Stockton created The Utopia Squadron which was tasked with patrolling these waters looking for pirate activity in order to keep society functioning smoothly. The Coast Guardsmen who served in that squadron are still remembered today! The history of Atchison can be traced back to 1869 when James Atchison arrived in what is now Wichita County, Kansas with his family looking for a new home following the war. He located what is now downtown Atchison on land that he had purchased from Jesse Kendall earlier that year. The first store opened in 1870, making Atchison one of the oldest continuously operating businesses in Wichita County. Abitious local businessmen quickly realized that at present there were no railroad connections between Wichita County and other parts of Kansas so they began buildingroads connecting their properties hereabouts with eastern Missouri, Illinois, Iowa City (now Des Moines), Topeka (- Hutchinson) and others along their route to market or trade with distant settlements inland. This enterprise stimulated great development not only within but also around this remote corner of our state – an indication that business enterprise really could make things happen if you hustled! Commerce flourishes where government fades away; that’s why we call our town “Pioneering City”! And who knows? It may yet stay pioneers until we all move out!
