Arkansas City, Kansas is home to the world’s first small batch coffee plant. The beans were roasted and ground by a group of farmers who started roasted and ground coffee in the early 1800s. Gentry and his brothers-in-law, Samuel Bemis and Andrew Gregg. The company grew rapidly, importing beans from all over the United States. Kesselman renamed the company The Arkansas City Coffee Company again in 1954 due to its location within Arkadelphia Municipal limits in southeast Arkansas County (now Tulsa County). In 1969, The Arkansas City Coffee Company merged with 2 other local businesses to form the McAlester Coffee Corporation (now McLeod Farms). This merger allowed for larger grower/processor partnerships which gave rise to some of today’s most prestigious small batch roasters including Blue Bottle Coffee, Peet’s Coffee & Tea, Caffeinee USA and Four Barrel Coffee Roasters.

Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in the U.S. state of Kansas, located on the Arkansas River. As of the 2010 census, its population was 68,711. It is the seventh-largest city in Kansas and the largest city in Johnson County by population. The city covers an area of 107 square miles (269 km2), making it one of the smallest cities in Johnson County and one of the smallest in Kansas. The first settlement in what is now Arkansas City was made by Europeans on July 8, 1824 when General James Kansa reported back to his superiors at Fort Leavenworth that he had discovered a new land grant called "Cheyenne" lying just beyond present-day Topeka. The town grew rapidly due to transportation improvements brought about by wagon road construction starting from Independence (now Wichita) and continuing north to Topeka under American control after Mexico gained independence from Spain in 1821. In 1830, major changes took place when both federal agents named John Capps and territorial governor Isaac Brock came through town with important instructions for Indian affairs; they were followed by other government officials including Major George Armstrong Custer during his 1874–75 buffalo hunting expedition through centralKansas which led to increased trade between Topeka and Centralia as well as compelling settlers eastward along what would become known as Route 66 until that route's destruction by a tornado on May 10, 1995 – more than eighty years after its original routing – creating what is now downtown Arkansas City; much of which has been preserved since then thanks to private donations or public funding allocations from various levels of government throughout its history. Arkansas City incorporated as a municipality on February 17, 1907 following passage of an act entitled "An Act To Form A Municipality In The Town Of Topeka And Its Vicinity." Mayor Charles Hildebrandt served as mayor for twentyfour years before retiring effective September 1, 2006 having held office for over sixty five years total; he previously served two terms as assistant county clerk prior to that role becoming top deputy sheriff within Johnson County Sheriff’s Department Effective January 1st 2014 until his retirement effective September 1st 2016 under current Chief Deputy Daryl McNamara who succeeded him upon Hildebrandt’s death Governor Sam Brownback announced plans for consolidation within Johnson County effective January 1st 2017 with effect from that date local governments will be headquartered within their respective jurisdictions rather than within individual counties

The first settlers in Arkansas City, Kansas were James and Nancy Hays who arrived in 1854. They built the first cabin on the current site of the city. The town was named for General John Fenton, who was killed in a duel with Jesse James in 1859. The town continued to grow until it had a population of over 5,000 people by 1890. In 1907, the Kansas State Legislature passed a bill that changed the name of the city to Hutchinson after former Governor George Hutchinson.
