Arkansas City was founded on July 4, 1854, by citizens of Lawrence, Kansas as the town of Garnet. Arkansas City has been a county seat since 1856 and has been governed by a mayor and six trustees who are elected to four-year terms. The current mayor is Dustin Ladd. The city was named for General John Custer, who fought in the American Civil War from 1861 to 1865 and died at the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 while commanding an army unit known as the Seventh Cavalry Regiment. Arkansas City first became populated when settlers arrived fromKansas in droves during the late 1830s and early 1840s following discovery of rich silver and gold deposits in what is now Johnson County. In 1854, Garnet was renamed Arkansas City after Isaac Asa Hutchinson, governor of Kansas Territory at that time. On July 4th of that year it became official with citizens voting on whether or not to name their new community after General Custer's famous victory over Native Americans at Battle Creek near Fort Dodge on May 6th (the day before National Independence Day). The first post office opened in Garnet on December 3rd, 1855 and remained open until it closed on February 14th, 1909 due to high postage rates resulting from Buffalo Bill Cody's Western show being staged nearby for several months each year during those years. The first phone company had service available only through personal calls between towns residents because there were no roads then allowing express mail service like we have today! The last post office closed its doors on September 25th 1973 due to lack of customers despite efforts by local officials to market Arkansas City as an " arrival point" for tourists visiting Wichita during that year's state fair which was being held in Topeka at that time; however visitors would still be able to contact their friends back home using these same services until recently!
