Arkansas City, Kansas is a city in Jackson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 4,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Hutchinson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1881 by John and Anna Mayfield as Arkansas City and named after nearby Arkansas River. It became a town on December 3, 1907 when it merged with two other towns—Bellefontaine and Hutchinson—to form the new Wichita–Hutchinson metropolitan area. On November 26, 1995, Arkansas City repealed its incorporation as a city and reverted to its original name of Dodge City. The citizens of Dodge City voted on October 15, 2006 to annex the unincorporated community of Garland to their city limits. This annexation created an additional voice in the local government for citizens living outside of Wichita–Hutchinson who provide services such as policing and firefighting within the boundaries of their city councilmember's district. In order to celebrate this annexation success, events were planned throughout October that included performances by locals music groups and kids' soccer tournaments. In recent years there has been talk about restoring or creating streetscape improvements in downtown Dodge City which would improve pedestrian flow and make it more attractive for businesses to locate there; however no decisions have yet been made about what will be done specifically with regards to this topic
