Arkansas City is a small town in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,852 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita-Lincoln Micropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by anti-slavery activists on the banks of the Arkansas River in 1854 as a free people's settlement to resist white settlers encroaching onto Indian land east of the river. The original name for the community was "Wichita". In 1871, it became part of Lawrence County and then Johnson County when those counties were organized. According to the 2010 census, Arkansas City has a total area of , all of it land. It is nestled between two mountain ranges—the easternmost range being about high and forms much of its backbone; and the westernmost range reaching up to . As of 2000, there were no schools within Arkansas City limits (though there are public libraries). However, residents can attend Baylor University in Wichita or Liberty University in Johnstown. There are also several churches in town—one Baptist and one Pentecostal—and local businesses include some retail stores, restaurants, and bars. A post office called Hutchinson had been established in 1857 but closed operations in 1860 due to low mail traffic from nearby Lawrenceburg. A new post office called Arkansas City was built on November 3rd, 1861 under auspices of the Kansas State Agricultural Society after an offer from Mayor James Sweeny to provide goods necessary for building an agricultural society office that would be located near his home on Main Street (now Elm Street). On December 12th 1865 it moved into newly erected facilities with room for only 30 boxes which proved inadequate so on January 2nd 1866 an addition 50 boxes were added along with 4 fireplaces making it capable handle 350 letters/cans per day earning it its current name: "Arkansas City Post Office"

Arkansas City is a city in Johnson County, Kansas, United States. The population was 5,619 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The first settler in Arkansas City was John Dodge on May 16, 1858. The town site was surveyed on November 8, 1859 by George Washington Carver and Alfred Peltier. The townsite was named for General Nathan Bedford Forrest and his wife Caroline Johnston (1822-1892), daughter of General James K. Polk Johnston (1786-1865). Forrest had been an officer in the Confederate army during the American Civil War and later became a general in the Union army. Dodge and his family moved to Arkansas City from Topeka on October 15, 1861, when that city surrendered to Union forces following the Battle of Fort Sumter. After the war ended, he returned to Topeka and died there on December 12th 1865 at the age of eighty-six years old; his wife also died there six months later at the age of seventy-four years old. The first post office in Arkansas City was established on November 8, 1859; it was renamed Prairie View after Captain Samuel Pryor Porter who served as Ulysses S. Grant's aide de camp during his presidential campaigns of 1860 and 1864; Pryor Porter had come to Kansas Territory with James Buchanan as part of President Abraham Lincoln's "Kansas Cession" during which Missouri ceded her western borderlands east of Nebraska to Kansas without any compensation to Missourifolk. In 1870–71 seven citizens donated land for a public square near present day First Baptist Church; this square eventually became known as Park Square because it sat behind what is now First National Bank Building across Main Street from Park Square School District No 2 which operated out of that building until 1942 when it moved into its current location across Third Avenue from Park Square Elementary School District No 1 which operates out of that building since then) After two years as a hopsital center for sick Kanansetts soldiers stationed along wagon roads through Johnson County prior to its opening in 1863 by Colonel William Jarnell Woodson under orders from Governor Andrew Johnson larger facilities were authorized by Congress but no such structures were built due mainly because local entrepreneurs refused To cooperate with military officers running what they saw as a corrupt government
