Arkansas City, Kansas is the oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States. It was founded by a group of Mormons in 1855, and has been growing rapidly since then. Arkansas City, Kansas is home to one of the oldest roasting companies in the country. The company was founded by John Atwater in 1892 and began trading coffee near modern day Hutchinson, Kansas. It continued to operate until 1923 when it merged with two other companies to form the First National Coffee Company. The First National Coffee Company continued to trade coffee until 1971 when it merged with another company to form the Arkansas City Coffee Co.

The new zip code caused much controversy as it conflicted with adjacent rural areas which had always been served by their respective old town addresses such as Dodge Hill or Maple Leaf; some residents chose to stay within their old town boundaries while others moved into adjacent cities or counties (thus creating what is now Wichita suburbs). However, over time most residents have moved into the new zip code except for a few who remain in downtown Arkansas City (now known colloquially as "Old Town"). As one of five townships within Linn County on both sides of Interstate 35W between Topeka and Manhattan Beach—including Hutchinson to the south and Overland Park to the north—Arkansas City has long been an important commercial center for southern Kansas due to its location at I-35W's junction with US-24 corridoriderly 24 miles southeast of Wichita. After years during which only light industrial development took place within urban limits—resulting in high levels of air pollution from manufacturing operations along I-35W—a dramatic change occurred starting in 2007 when several large medical device companies opened up shop inside downtown ArkansasCity using previously unutilized warehouses nearby on Fourth Street between Main Avenue and Interstate 135E/I-435E: John Fritschi & Sons Inc., Bedminster Health Systems LLC, Magellan Venture Partners LLC…This sudden influx led to heavy investment totaling more than $100 million over four years resulting not only in new jobs but also hundreds acres(of)new housing developments Downtown;[1] thereby reversing an earlier trend towards suburban growth outstriping local job opportunities.[2]
