Arkansas City, Kansas is a town in Sedgwick County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,816 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1872 by parents of citizens of Arkansas Post and Clear Creek townships who were moving west to escape the violence and destruction wrought by the American Civil War. The name "Arkansas City" was given to the settlement by General Raphael Saxton during his march through central Kansas on his way to Indian Territory in search of new land for the Union army. As early as 1881, farmers had started growing corn, wheat, cattle and other crops near what is now Arkansas City's downtown square. By 1907 most residents lived within a few miles of downtown or on adjacent farms or ranches that supplied their needs for transportation and trade. In 1924, when Sedgwick County was organized, it included all of Wichita County except for a small strip along its eastern border which became Hutchinson County again due to changes in state boundaries following the Mexican Revolution. In that year Arkansas City moved from its original location north of Wichita Falls east into Sedgwick County. That move increased its population from 1,452 in 1924 to 2,541 by 1970; however it fell back to 1,816 as of 2010 because ofilantro growth and decline throughout Sedgwick County since then. There are two main sectors within Arkansas City: older businesses located around Main Street while newer businesses have taken up space east of US-61 near Veterans Memorial Coliseum/University Park before moving west past Interstate 35 onto Sheridan Boulevard where they canrepreneurship has flourished with several high-tech companies active over the years including Hewlett-Packard (HP), Dell (DELL), Intel (INTC), ATI Technologies (ATI) and Microsoft (MSFT).
