Army gift history in Arkansas City, Kansas started with the creation of the Fort Hays State University Infantry Regiment on September 14, 1881. The regiment was organized to serve as a garrison unit at Fort Hays and also provide rifle practice for the local militia. On October 8, 1881, the regiment was redesignated as the 1st Battalion, 3rd Infantry Regiment and given its first battleflag. The 1st battalion spent most of its time garrisoning at Fort Hays before being mobilized for service in Governor John F. Kennedy’s Presidential campaign in 1961. The battalion served as part of 4th Brigade III Corps under First Lieutenant Colonel Edward Condon until their deployment to Vietnam on November 2, 1966 where they fought off numerous attacks by North Vietnamese forces. After their return home they were reorganized and redesignated as Headquarters/5th Brigade I Corps under Colonel George S Hillman until his death in 1978. In 1981 Company A was disbanded due to lack of personnel while Company B became a Drill Battalion before being disbanded again in 1992 due to low morale among its members after serving two tours of duty in Bosnia-Herzegovina during Operation Joint Endeavor. Today there are only three companies left active within the 1st Battalion (3rd Infantry Regiment) with most soldiers having retired or been discharged from service since 1991 whenCompany A ceased operations and Company B became a Drill Battalion once again following their tour of duty in Bosnia-Herzegovina. The Arkansas City ragamuffin troops were an American military unit during World War I. The unit was organized on October 25, 1918 in the town ofArkansas City, Kansas. The regiment was composed of men from the city and surrounding rural areas. The unit served in France and Belgium until November 1918 when it returned to the United States. On December 1, 1918, the regiment was redesignated as Company C, 9th Infantry Regiment (US) during World War II. The company served with distinction throughout the war and received numerous awards including two Distinguished Service Medals. In May 1945, Company C was disbanded but its members were re-organized as a battalion under the command of Colonel John P. Kennedy outside of Fort Riley, Kansas for training in amphibious warfare operations before being deployed to Japan in September 1945 as part of Operation Enduring Freedom. After returning to America in November 1946, the battalion joined up with 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Leavenworth Kansas before being disbanded on December 15th 1946 along with all other infantry units within 2nd Infantry Division.
Arkansas City, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. It is located in Randolph County, about 17 miles (27 km) east of Topeka and 12 miles (19 km) west of Wichita. The population was 1,848 at the 2010 census. The first settler in Arkansas City was George Hargrave. He arrived there in 1854 and built the first post office there. The town was named after Fort Sumter, south of Jacksonville, Florida. The present day Arkansas City was founded by James W. McFarlane and his family in 1872 as a wagon road stop on the Santa Fe Trail. In 1875, McFarlane donated land to build a city hall and schoolhouse on which he erected a granite marker that reads "ARKANSAS CITY - Built by James Wm McFarlane February 22d 1872". In 1907, when Wichita became an independent city, Arkansas City annexed it without giving it any voting rights; however, Wichita has since given its blessing for future annexation into Wichita proper. In 1942 Arkansas City had 1,953 residents; by 1960 it had dropped to 521 residents due to the Great Depression which hit America hard at that time. However since then growth has resumed with over 800 people now living in the city limits over the last ten years or so according to current population estimates from KS Demographics website
