Arkansas City, Kansas is a small town in the US state of Kansas. The population was 1,351 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita metropolitan area. The first known settlement in what is now Arkansas City was made by Osage Indians in 1798. They named their new location for General James Wilkinson, who had been instrumental in achieving independence from Great Britain. In 1821, the United States Congress passed an act naming it as the site of Fort Riley (later Kansas City), after General John Brown's successful raid on that military post near present-day Wichita. That year also saw the arrival of Assistant Territorial Governor Gideon Welles and his wife, Lucy Welles Dodge, to take up residence hereabouts. In 1827, Colonel Samuel secure passage for a party of settlers led by Captain George Armstrong across the Arkansas River to this newly settled land east of present-day Wichita Falls. By 1830, over 100 people had moved into this community under Colonel Samuel's leadership and management; many were farmers and mechanics who worked on various fur trade settlements throughout what became Oklahoma Territory and Texas before becoming citizens of Kansas established within that territory following its admission into the Union as a state in 1861. On July 24th 1865 – just days after Lincoln was assassinated – troops under Major General Edwin Mims burned down Fort Riley during an attempt to stop Confederate forces from retreating through that post towards Independence Heights near Topeka – thus ending three years' siege warfare which had claimed more than 350 lives including those of some 40 British soldiers garrisoned on that fortifications! The burning played a significant role in shaping later opinion concerning American militarism during that period; most Americans saw it as an example of how America could crush any insurgency or resistance without resorting to violence!
