Andover, Kansas is a small town in the United States of America located in Shawnee County. It was founded by settlers in 1868 and has since grown to be a major agricultural center with over 100 businesses. The townsite is also home to Andover High School, one of the most prominent schools in Shawnee County. Andover's rich history can be found on both the local and national levels. The first people to arrive in what is now Andover were Methodists who came from Kentucky in 1819. They built a log cabin on the banks of the Missouri River and named it after their hometown, Northampton, England. The Methodists stayed for only a few years before moving on to other settlements around this area. In 1868, George Miller and his family settled in what is now Andover Township. They were able to purchase 2 acres of land which they donated to the township as part of their gift for $100+. At that time, Shawnee County was just emerging from its colonization process and had not yet been organized into counties or townships. The town began growing quickly due to its location close to important resources such as water supplies and farmland. By 1870, there were already over 50 residents living in Andover! By 1880, there were more than 150 businesses operating in Andover! Andover's growth continued through the early 1900s despite World War I and Prohibitionism; many farmers turned to production during these difficult times. In 1925, when Shawnee County was created fully out of Kansas statehood, Andovers growth stopped abruptly because so much industry had moved away from rural areas towards larger cities like Wichita (then Wichita Falls). However, during the late 1960s through early 1970s significant growth resumed as new companies arrived including Tyson Foods (now Tyson Foods Inc.) which established itself locally as one of the leading food processing firms in America; eventually becoming one of the largest food retailers nationwide.. During this time period Asbestos manufacturing became very popular due to asbestos being plentiful near farms throughout central Kansas; however health concerns about asbestos led Tooele County officials (led by Mayor John Rhodes)to ban asbestos products from their stores beginning with K-mart starting back up operations on October 5th 1967 after an eight year moratorium while they investigated health concerns related asbestos exposure among employees There are several lawsuits surrounding how K-mart handled these issues but ultimately no guilty verdictswere reached... end result: A public relations fiasco that negatively impacted Tooele county economy
