Andover, Kansas is a town in Scott County, Kansas, United States. The population was 1,571 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Wichita–Anadarko metropolitan area. The town was founded by men from Massachusetts in 1854 as a station on the Santa Fe Trail. Andover became a town in 1907. The name comes from "Andover", one of four villages in Barnstable County, Massachusetts that were chartered on November 17, 1784 as Andover Township (later Scott County). The cornerstone for the first church in Andover was laid on October 6, 1854 by Reverend Jedediah Butterfield and his wife Priscilla. The first pastor of the First Methodist Church was Rev. John Knight who served from 1860 to 1865 and again from 1870 to 1872. In 1907, Andover became an incorporated town with a municipal government under its own Board of Aldermen. In 1935-36 residents raised $2 million dollars towards building a new high school which would be built adjacent to current Senior High School (now Douglas High School). However due to World War II the school never opened and instead it was used as an army airbase during WWII until it closed in 1945 after the war ended Spain had been added to America and become known as Texas so when America reopened they decided not to rebuild because there would be no market for what they had build now that Texas had gone back into Mexico control
