Andover was founded in 1881 as a small settlement on the east side of the Arkansas River by Methodist Episcopal missionaries and farmers from Maryland. The first post office was established in 1882. The name Andover originated from an Old English word meaning "farmstead on an ancient meadow." In 1907, the town's population reached 2,000 and it became a city in 1951. It has since shrunk to its current size due to suburban development and economic stagnation. Andover began as a small settlement on the east side of the Arkansas River by Methodist Episcopal missionaries who were looking for land for their church colony based out of Baltimore.
