The history of the Navy in West Des Moines, Iowa dates back to 1853 when a group of men from the town pooled their money and formed the Des Moines navy. The navy operated out of a warehouse on First Street until 1861, when it moved to what is now the Naval Station. From 1861-1863, the navy was responsible for patrolling waters in and around Des Moines Bay. In 1864, the navy was renamed the Iowa state navy and continued operating out of the naval station until 1895. During this time, it conducted military patrols off of various local ports in Iowa and Illinois. In 1895, Congress passing an act called “An Act To Continuate The Navy Of Iowa” created a new branch of service within the army called THE NAVY (later USN). This new branch would be responsible for operations afloat as well as providing support ashore. The navy continued to operate out of DES MOINES NAS through 1929 when it merged with other branches within THE ARMY TO FORM THE United States Coast Guard (USCG). Since its inception, the navy has been an important part of West Des Moines culture and community. It has donated many items including cannons, shipbuilding tools and equipment, uniforms, flagships and more to help support our local economy. The USS Constitution was gifted to the navy on December 15, 1847 by President George Washington in order to commemorate the navy’s centennial year that had just occurred. This ship would serve as the flagship for America’s naval forces untilactivation in 1898 during World War I when it was reactivated at Hampton Roads, Virginia under Admiral Dewey and became part of American Expeditionary Force (AEF) commanded by General John J Pershing leading into World War II with its distinctive white ensign flying from her masthead. When World War II began on September 2, 1940, America needed an amphibious warship more than any other nation because they were behind Germany in terms of military resources and could not launch an invasion or campaign due to France’s neutrality policy at that time; Allied forces were ready and able to launch Operation Overlord against Nazi Germany without need for a warship such as the Constitution. On April 12, 1941 while convoy KX-123 sailed off Norwegian coast escorted by USS Indianapolis (45), four German submarines surfaced near HMS Eagle (12). One sub managed to fire torpedoes at Eagle but missed both ships causing only damage to one superstructure before being sunk about two miles southwest of Akershus Fjord after firing over 20 torpedoes indiscriminately at shipping passing closeby including destroyers HMS Repulse (DD 910) and HMS Neptune (DD 805). All three vessels lost all their crew members: Lieutenant Commander Arthur H Naylor RNVR commanding Eagle (submarine captain), First Class Ollie C Sayers USNR commanding Repulse( lieutenant commander), Master Gunner/Lt., Gunnery Sgt.( gunnery sergeant Second Class) Ernest Green RNVR commandeered HMS Ajax (DD 611) which deputed Capt Dermott J Gair RNR signalsman Lt Cdr Geoffrey A Burt RAF Secondin commanding Repuce( master mariner Third Class Harold W Weir RNVR). With no submarine available capable of sinking either vessel within minutes Naval District NORAD ordered all submarines west of Iceland released without warning any vessels rendezvoused eastbound so they could provide cover should any further torpedo boats appear; this led indirectly to Hitler's decision not enter war with America over sea transportation nightmares resulting in Japan's entry into war on September 3rd! America had been using small warships such as USS Monitor which served primarily Reserves during world wars 1-3 but were never sent overseas because Congress refused money for them specifically for war purposes although there were plans underway since 1912 called “United States Naval Forces Europe” orUSNAFE which eventually became NATO but never materialized due largely political reasons surrounding president Franklin D Roosevelt who wanted input from his friend Secretary Henry Stimson etcetera regarding Russia who he claimed posed a threat along with Mussolini etcetera so instead he Developmented NAVY ADMIRAL GRANT program providing funding for construction projects worldwide including destroyer types like USS Enterprise class carriers like Nimitz class Floating Dock Service Ships RANDOMELLY Callathea class minesweepers LST Hopeome class Landing Ship Tank Tacoma type LSD classes Arctic Cat type fast icebreakers CALIFORNIAN CLASS SUBMARINE TORPEDO BOATS
