West Des Moines, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa. The population was 87,599 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cedar Rapids–Des Moines metropolitan area. The city was founded in 1855 by General George Armstrong Custer and his Seventh Cavalry Regiment as Fort Calhoun on the present-day site of North High Street and East Market Street. After Nebraska became a U.S. state in 1885, West Des Moines became its second city and first merger between two other cities, Dodge City and Council Bluffs, which occurred in 1907 when those two cities amalgamated to form West Des Moines (Dodge City had been organized earlier that year).
