The Air Force has a long and proud history in the city of West Des Moines. The USAF Base at Wright-Patterson AFB is home to one of the world's largest airfields, with more than 160,000 acres. The base also plays an important role in the city's economy, providing jobs for local residents and supporting military projects around the world. In 1951, when Iowa became a state, its capital was located in Cedar Rapids. However, due to various factors - including population growth and lack of available land - Iowa's Air Force Base was established at Wright-Patterson AFB in 1961. At that time, it was one of only two USAF bases in the United States with a strategic nuclear capability. Today, Wright-Patterson AFB oversees nearly 60,000 acres within the city limits of West Des Moines and employs approximately 12,000 locals who support military projects around the globe. One of these projects is Operation Neptune Spear - an effort to destroy North Korea's nuclear weapons program. In 2007, Operation Neptune Spear marked 50 years since Iowabecame a state - and 50 years since Wright-Patterson AFB opened its doors to servicemen from all over America. This anniversary provides an opportunity for reflection on how our nation's Armed Forces have helped protect our country both during peacetime and during wartime times - both past and present.

West Des Moines, Iowa is a city in the U.S. state of Iowa. It was founded in 1851 as Cedar Rapids, and became West Des Moines in 1903. The population was 97,653 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Cedar Rapids–Iowa City Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers to what would become West Des Moines were three men from New York who arrived in 1851 on the same ship as General David Dixon's forces during the American Civil War. They named their new town Cedar Rapids after the then-large stand of cedar trees near their farmstead on the River Vermilion. The town grew quickly due to its location and access to water supplies that made it an ideal place for grain storage and trade with neighboring towns and villages along the river system. In 1863, when Iowa State University was founded in Ames, West Des Moines joined that campus as one of its original institutions. In 1903, when Iowa State University merged with Northern Illinois University to form UIUC, West Des Moines became an integral part of that university's growing community empire which included Carbondale, IL; Peoria Heights, IL; Northbrook Heights, IL; Arlington Heights, IL; Chicago Ridge/Oak Lawn/Lisle Township (now Elmhurst),IL;Loadley Hills/Mundelein Hills (now Naperville),IL; Elgin Terrace/Elmhurst Gardens (now Glenview),IL and finally Urbana-Champaign County (now Champaign). UIUC also acquired land north of downtown which would eventually comprise UIUC Parkland Campus and much of west suburban Cook County including Schaumburg Highlands/Niles Township (later Skokie)and Palatine East Side neighborhoods outside Chicago Ridge area such as Kenwood Village and Highwood Forest areas located just south of Interstate I-94 in Kane County near Geneva Lake adjacent to White Rock Reservoir on eastern border with Douglas County . The arrival of television brought about changes within UIUC itself as well as withinwest suburban Cook County which had been controlled byUIUC since 1924 when Kilburn College became a divisional branch campus under UIUC banner followed by Normal College(1927), DuPage Community Colleges(1929), Hennepin Technical Institute(1930)and lastly Northwest School District No 2(1941). By 1955 all these colleges had closed or moved off campus while Northwestern Polytechnic Institute continued operations under separate auspices until it merged into Northwestern Illinois Universities' reputed "technical college" KULC in 1969 becoming one among many NCAA Division I schools associated with Northwestern Illinois Universities athletic programs resulting in Wildcats being called "Northwestern Illini". A new library building was completed on North Green Street between Waveland Avenue and Sheridan Road in 1957 following a campaign led by Alderman John Ahern that resulted in more than $200,000 raised for her namesake foundation originally established at Central High School.. This addition provided significant resources for both local history research and public education programming throughout western suburbia throughibliographical@uiuc . Southside areas such asKenwood Villageand Highwood Forest soon received similar buildings matching those on north side following campaigns led by Alderman Ahern again resulting In more than $300K raised forSouth Side History Museum fund
