Waukee is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,982 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Des Moines–West Des Moines metropolitan area. Waukee is located on State Highway 6 east of Cedar Rapids. The town was platted in 1855 by Elias Howe and John Gossett, who named it for their friend William Waukee (1814-1881). Waukee was originally a small farming community with two stores and one post office. The first school in the town was built in 1857 and the first Methodist church was built in 1868. In 1875, Waukee became an incorporated municipality with a mayor and six council members. In 1927, Waukee annexed the neighboring town of Burlington to form a new city center. The annexation created much needed housing for residents during the Great Depression years. In 1965, Waukee withdrew from Burlington's city government and adopted its own police department which still exists today as an independent law enforcement agency within the City ofWaukee limits

Waukee is a small town in Iowa, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2010 census. Waukee is part of the Cedar Rapids-Davenport-West Des Moines metropolitan area. It lies just east of the Iowa–Wisconsin border and is located on the south side of the UI Quadrangle on State Street near US Highway 6 and UI Boulevard. The first settler in Waukee was John Dickson in 1836. Prior to that, there were only Indian trails passing through what is now Waukee County. In 1855, two brothers by the name of Grimes bought 640 acres (250 ha) in present-day Waukee from David Wheeler for $1,600. That same year saw the arrival of Henry Hays as Mayor of Cedar Rapids and he donated land along State Street to build what would become City Hall. In 1856, Waukee had a population of just eight people when they built their first school building with 30 students; it served as a social hall until 1912 when New Market School opened which became their first high school. In 1907, Jens Jensen donated land to create Stonington Park east of town for use as a public parkland which still exists today! The city purchased additional property from him in 1916 and development began on what would become downtown Waukee – including streets leading to businesses on Bluffs Road behind City Hall and then turning northeast onto State Streets towards Presentation Square – one mile southwest of where Union Pacific Railroad Depot now stands (built 1886). A new courthouse was completed in 1922 and served as both courtrooms for the town until 1951 when an addition was made to City Hall which included jail cells! During World War II, many local businesses manufactured materials for military use such as munitions and vehicles; these plants closed after hostilities ended but reopened again during subsequent decades while downtown remained largely empty until its recent revival. When Cedar Rapids Area Community College opened up shop downtown in 1965 it rapidly became one of WI’s largest community college campuses with satellite campuses throughout northwest Iowa; education has continued uninterrupted here since then with no sign thatowntownWaukee will close any time soon!
