The name Waukee comes from the Ojibwe word "wahi" meaning "to stretch out," and "-ia" meaning "town." The town site was laid out in 1847 by Nehemiah Wardrop. Waukee is a city in Johnson County, Iowa, United States. The population was 2,773 at the 2000 census. Waukee is located on the east side of the Iowa River and is bordered by the city of Des Moines to the south and west, Ames to the north, and Newton to the east. The first people settled in what is now Waukee were German immigrants who came from Kiel in Prussia in 1836. They named their community "Wahlebe", meaning "place where there are trees." In 1841, Andrew J. Smith moved his family from Dodgeville, Wisconsin to Waukee and began an agricultural business called Smith & Sons Grain Mill. The mill worked until 1920 when it was sold to George A. Riley and rebuilt as a housing development known as Riley's Grove which still stands today on East Davenport Avenue between Second Street and Third Street. In 1906, Waukee incorporated as a town under the name of Waneta Township with a population of 121 residents.
