The Iowa National Guard has a long history in Waukee, IA. The first national guard unit was organized on December 12, 1855 and served as part of the territorial militia. On May 1, 1861, the Iowa National Guard was raised to full strength and mobilized for the American Civil War. The unit fought in several engagements including the Battle of Fort Sumter. In 1865, the Iowa National Guard disbanded but its members were not re-enlisted in the Army until 1868. From 1865 to 1870, the Iowa National Guard constituted a brigade which patrolled the state's borders. In 1870-71, it constituted an infantry regiment which served as part of Union army forces during Reconstruction in South Carolina and Georgia. From 1912 to 1920, it constituted 2nd Brigade Group (Iowa) of Cavalry Division (III). On July 1, 1921 it became 4th Brigade Group (Iowa) of Cavalry Division (IV). It was redesignated 5th Brigade Group (Iowa) on October 1st 1945 and concurrently activated at Mount Pleasant barracks where it remained until September 16th 1949 when all brigades were relocated to Des Moines under command of 2nd Infantry Division commanded by Colonel Charles Ewingbaugh Jr..
Waukee is a town in Cedar County, Iowa, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2000 census. It is the smallest community in Iowa and the second-smallest of those in Minnesota. Waukee's economy is based on agriculture, with a small manufacturing sector. The first settler in what would become Waukee was George Prentice in 1851. The town site was surveyed and platted by John A. Brown in 1872. The name "Waukee" was chosen as it sounded like an English word meaning "a well." A post office was established at Waukee in 1875, and remained open until it closed on October 15, 1912. In 1907, local farmers formed the township of Waukee to provide more organized authority for their activities within their own area; this helped increase production since all members were responsible for each other's actions. In 1924, Waukee incorporated as a city under the provisions of the state Constitution of that year which granted cities such powers when approved by a three-fifths vote of City Commissioners or by a majority vote of both Mayor and Councilmembers who sit on City Commission terms renewable only for two years with no possibility of removal from office without cause or indictment by grand jury). The city council created zoning ordinances to guide development within certain boundaries while still protecting farmland that extended into neighboring townships; this helped keep growth localized while still allowing for continued agricultural production long after most small towns had given up farming entirely for economic reasons. Waukee is a city in Iowa, United States. The population was 5,876 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Waterloo County and home to the Waukee Agricultural High School District. The city was founded in 1854 by John Waukee and his family on land granted to him by the federal government. The name "Waukee" comes from a Sioux word meaning "a place where buffalo roam." The city was platted in 1858, and named after John Waukee's older brother Amos Waukee. In 1886, John Waukee donated land for what would become the Iowa State Fairgrounds. In 1907, Walter Silliman became mayor of Waukee after serving two terms as a commissioner on City Council. He continued to serve until he resigned due to health problems in 1916. A local legend has it that during World War I when soldiers were being sent into battle overseas and could not be brought back home for medical reasons, Silliman ordered food delivered to his house three times daily so he could eat while fighting. After leaving office, he built an apartment complex near downtown that still stands today. In 1938, William Hickey became mayor of Waukee after serving two terms as councilman with no interruption until his death in 1943 at the age of 57 years old due to pneumonia complicated by leukemia which had been taking over his life since 1931 In 1951 Mayor Hickey's widow Mrs. Hickey took over as mayor upon her husband's death She served until she retired in 1978 From 1978-1981 MrsHickey was succeeded by her son Rick Hickey who also served as Mayor from 1981-1988 . Waukee was founded in 1847 by David W. Hubbell and his wife, Nancy. Hubbell was a fur trader and the first postmaster at the town. The Hubbells built a log cabin on the current site of Waukee in 1848 and started to sell goods from their store. In 1865, they moved their store to what is now the corner of Main Street and South Wisconsin Avenue. The Hubbells were also instrumental in building Waukee's first school, which opened in 1870. They died in 1919 and their daughter, Mrs. Emma Loomis, continued the family business until her death in 1955.
